Cyclic Olefin Copolymers
Symbol: | COC |
Crystallinity: | Amorphous |
Trade Names: | Topas |
Description:
COC’s are a family of amorphous, glass-clear polyolefins providing excellent electrical and optical properties, low density, low moisture absorption, strength and stiffness. Because of metallocene catalysts, COC’s are now able to be manufactured at economically viable costs.
Processing Considerations:
- Residence Time: Residence time is typically 2 – 4 minutes.
- Back Pressure: Back pressure runs 150 PSI (1500 plastic pressure) or less.
- Drying: Drying is generally NOT necessary unless stored under humid conditions..
- RPM: RPM is normally runs 30 – 125.
Screw Design Based on:
- Low Compression Ratio
- Medium Transition Length
- Deep Meter Channel Depth
Other Information:
- Mixer: When required, the mixer must be a low shear mixer like Reiloy Westland Corporation’s Eagle.
- Barrier: Barrier screws are not recommended for processing ETFE or PFA.
- Custom Design: A screw specifically designed for COC is recommended over a general purpose design.
- Recommended Valve: A 3-piece free flow valve is recommended.
- Screw & Barrel Material Recommendation: Screws and barrels processing COC can be manufactured from standard materials. .
Various additives and/or fillers can have an effect on a resin’s process behavior. For more detailed information, please contact Reiloy Westland Corporation.
