Learn More about HIPS.

HIPS cash drawer Fotolia_36375665_S.jpgHIPS contains 5 to 15% Butadiene (elastomer) which provides a low cost, highly rigid and good low temperature impact strength material. HIPS will show splay when overheated or subjected to high shear.

Processing Considerations:

  • Residence Time: Residence time ranges from 2 to 4 minutes.
  • Back Pressure: Recommended back pressure is 200 PSI (or 2000 plastic pressure) or less.
  • Drying: Drying is not required in some cases but, as a general rule, drying is recommended.
  • RPM: Recommended RPM is between 30 and 125.

Screw Design Based on:

  • Low Compression Ratio
  • Long Transition Length
  • Medium Meter Channel Depth

Other Information:

  • Mixer: A low shear, mixing screw can be used to run HIPS. Reiloy Westland Corporation’s Eagle mixer has been proven to successfully process this resin.
  • Barrier: Barrier screw designs are not recommended for processing HIPS.
  • Custom Design: Screws specifically designed to process HIPS are recommended over general purpose screw designs.
  • Recommended Valve: Valve should be a 3-piece free-flow valve.
  • Screw & Barrel Material Recommendation: Screws and barrels can be manufactured out of standard materials.
