Description:

PMMA Acyrlic Card Fotolia_50303610_S.jpgAcrylic is known for its clarity, hardness, weatherability and light transmission. It is produced in several grades, including a Hi-Impact.

Processing Considerations:

  • Residence Time: Residence time ranges from 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Back Pressure: Keep back pressure at 150 PSI (or 1500 plastic pressure) or less.
  • Drying: Drying is not necessary but it can help part appearance.
  • RPM: RPM is typically 30 to 100.

Screw Design Based on:

  • Low Compression Ratio
  • Long Transition Length
  • Deep Meter Channel Depth

Other Information:

  • Mixer: Can run successfully with non-restrictive mixing screw. Eagle mixing screw will improve melt quality and clarity of part, and is recommended for tinted parts.
  • Barrier: Barrier screws are normally not recommended.
  • Custom Design: A custom screw designed for PMMA is recommended over a general purpose screw.
  • Recommended Valve: A three piece free-flow valve is recommended.
  • Screw & Barrel Material Recommendation: Screws and barrels can be manufactured out of standard materials.
  • Similar to Resin: The process is similar to polycarbonate and the same screw design will work in both applications.

Acrylic is very viscous, tough to melt and is shear sensitive but NOT heat sensitive. It is processed best with a “zero-meter” type screw.
