Polysulfone
Symbol: | PSU |
Crystallinity: | Amorphous |
Trade Names: | Udel, Mindel, Ultrason S |
Description:
PSU is a transparent, highly heat resistant and very stable engineering resin. It has low flammability and possesses good electrical properties even at temperatures up to 375°F. It is available in transparent and opaque grades. This resin is often used in electrical and food processing items or chemicals where resistance to acids and alkalis is critical.
Processing Considerations:
- Residence Time: Residence time is 2 to 4 minutes.
- Back Pressure: Keep back pressure at 150 PSI (or 1500 plastic pressure) or less.
- Drying: PSU resin must be dried.
- RPM: RPM is 30 – 125.
Screw Design Based on:
- Medium Compression Ratio
- Medium Transition Length
- Medium Meter Channel Depth
Other Information:
- Mixer: A low shear mixing screw can be used to run PSU. Reiloy Westland Corporation’s Eagle mixer has been proven to successfully process this resin.
- Barrier: Barrier screws are not recommended.
- Custom Design: A general purpose screw design will process this resin.
- Recommended Valve: A three piece free-flow or three piece locking valve is recommended.
- Screw & Barrel Material Recommendation: PSU processes very hot and chrome-plated components are not recommended.
- Similar to Resin: The process is very similar to PES.
Various additives and/or fillers can have an effect on a resin’s process behavior. For more detailed information, please contact Reiloy Westland Corporation.
