Learn more about Styrene Acrylonitrile

Description:

SAN plastics grate Fotolia_6197084_M.jpgSAN is a copolymer possessing transparency, high heat deflection, excellent gloss and chemical resistance. It is also very hard, rigid, and dimensionally stable with load bearing capability. ROVEL is an olefinic elastomer-modified SAN. It retains color and physical properties outdoors.

Processing Considerations:

  • Residence Time: Residence time is typically 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Back Pressure: Back pressure runs 150 PSI (1500 plastic pressure) or less.
  • Drying: SAN is hygroscopic and requires drying, including Rovel.
  • RPM: RPM runs 25 or higher.

Screw Design Based on:

  • Medium Compression Ratio
  • Medium Transition Length
  • Medium Meter Channel Depth

Other Information:

  • Mixer: A mixer is recommended when adding color or processing with fillers.
  • Barrier: Barrier screws are not recommended.
  • Custom Design: A custom design screw is not necessary when processing SAN.
  • Recommended Valve: A 3 piece free flow, 3 piece locking, 4 piece valve assembly or ball check can be used.
  • Screw & Barrel Material Recommendation: Standard alloys and coatings can be used.

Various additives and/or fillers can have an effect on a resin’s process behavior. For more detailed information, please contact Reiloy Westland Corporation.
