Channel Depth
The channel depth in the meter zone of the screw is determined by the resin to be processed. The feed and transition zone channel depths are dependent upon the selected compression ratio and screw profile.
Effect: The channel depths influence the degree of shear heat developed by the screw and the throughput of the screw. For example: a shallow screw channel:
- Increases exposure of plastic to heated barrel
- Increases the shear heat imparted to the resin
- Reduces the potential throughput of the screw.
A deep screw channel would have just the opposite effect, helping reduce the shear heat and potentially increasing the throughput of the screw.
